This Lago di Braies guide is here to help you plan an unforgettable trip to one of the Dolomites’ most beautiful alpine lakes.
Lago di Braies (also known as Pragser Wildsee) is located in South Tyrol, Italy. It’s famous for its iconic boathouse, turquoise-blue alpine waters that perfectly reflect the surrounding Seekofel mountains, and its easy accessibility.
I had the pleasure of exploring this stunning destination in July, and now this Lago di Braies guide will help you plan your own trip.
Lago di Braies Guide: Table of Contents
In this Lago di Braies guide, I’ll take you through all of the most important topics:

How to Get There & Where to Stay
Most travelers reach Lago di Braies from nearby towns, either by car or shuttle.
- Toblach (Dobbiaco) – 20 minute drive
- Cortina d’Ampezzo – 50 minute drive
- Villabassa (Niederdorf) – 15 minute drive
You can also stay on-site at Hotel Lago di Braies, but be sure to make your accommodation reservations in advance, as it books up quickly during peak season!
If you decide to stay in Cortina d’Ampezzo (a great hub for accessing a variety of Dolomite sights), I recommend Hotel Corona in town.

Parking & Reservations
Lago di Braies offers a variety of parking areas if you’re not staying on-site. However, if you’re visiting between July 1 and September 15, it’s best to reserve your parking in advance if you’re traveling by rental car. You can do this online at Parking Lago di Braies.
You can find more information on car and shuttle options here.
If you don’t want to rent a car, you can take a public shuttle from Toblach or Villabassa. Alternatively, you can take a bus from Cortina to Toblach and then another from there to Lago di Braies. However, the journey takes much longer, so I recommend renting a car if you’re coming from Cortina.
Lago di Braies Guide: Things to Do
Lago di Braies is the perfect destination, offering activities for both adventure seekers and those looking to relax. You can enjoy a meal at the hotel restaurant, pack a picnic, hike the trails, or even take a swim.
Walk the Lake Loop
The most well-known trail at Lago di Braies is the lake loop, which is approximately 1.5–2 miles long with minimal elevation gain. This hike takes about 1.5 hours (or around 2 hours at a slower pace with stops to enjoy the scenery) and offers a 360-degree view of the lake and surrounding mountains.
Rent a Rowboat

Lago di Braies is famous for its iconic boathouse with rowboat rentals — you can even elope here! Hop into one of the wooden boats and glide across the calm, turquoise waters.
Picnic by the Shore
It’s a perfect spot to pack a lunch, sit, and enjoy the views. This is especially ideal in the summer, when the weather is warm and sunny.

What better way to pair a picnic or a hike than with a dip in an alpine lake? (Just be mindful of the rowboats!)

Best Time to Visit
Visiting in July gave me the best experience of warm, long, sunny days, though summer also brings larger crowds.
- Late May to October: Visit during these months if you’re interested in renting the rowboats
- June & September: Summer months with full access to trails and boating with minimal crowds
- July & August: Peak summer season with more crowds (great months to visit, just plan accordingly with reservations!)
- Winter (November – April): Great for frozen, snow covered lake experiences. Boating will be unavailable and expect hiking closures.
