Couple standing on a bridge covered in sun beams during their Hocking Hills elopement

Moody Hocking Hills Elopement | Morning Hike & Candlelit Vows

In January, when Julia reached out about photographing her moody March elopement in Hocking Hills, we quickly began planning the day and choosing the perfect hiking routes. We connected on Zoom to review the trails, her favorite areas of the park, and her overall vision.

Because I shoot in Hocking Hills several times a year, I was able to guide Julia on hike times, the best photo spots, and backup locations if we wanted to switch things up.

Julia’s inspiration came from moody, foggy, sunlit Pinterest images. She wanted a day that felt intentional — thoughtful timing, meaningful locations, and only the people who mattered most.

Their day was set for a Friday in March. The morning was spent exploring the park on foot, and by evening, we gathered again at their Airbnb for a sunset ceremony.

What could have been a dreary, rainy week actually worked in our favor. The elopement landed on the warmest day yet, and the rain from the previous days had filled the streams and waterfalls, echoing across the trails. Sun streaks and fog danced throughout the park, perfectly bringing Julia’s moody Pinterest vision to life.

I spent the morning hiking with Julia and Adam on one of my favorite trails: Upper Falls. We stopped at waterfalls and bridges along the way, finishing with Julia taking a refreshing dip in the river.

We spent about two hours hiking and taking photos along the trail, then parted ways until the evening.

Of course, afternoon downtime meant editing sneak peeks from the hike at Oasis Coffee Shop in Rockbridge, iced latte in hand. I never skip a visit here — they even serve coffee flights!

Moody Hocking Hills Elopement | A Candlelit Ceremony

Julia’s final vision for her moody Hocking Hills elopement was a sunset ceremony, exchanging vows to Adam surrounded by over a dozen glowing candles.

They found the perfect Airbnb near Logan, Ohio, just a 20-minute drive from the trails. The house fit their small guest list perfectly, and the backyard felt like a private slice of Hocking Hills. A river ran through the yard, full from the week’s rain, and across the water, a small cave became the setting for their candlelit ceremony.

We prepared the ceremony site while the sun set, and as darkness fell, Julia and Adam said “I do” with their kids and loved ones nearby.

Julia & Adam’s Day | Summary
